THE LANGUAGE SCHOOL
The Ealing Community School of English for adults is in its 6th year. It started at St Paul's and now has classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings – three classes for 15 students each at Beginners, Entry 1 and Entry 2/3 levels are provided on both evenings; an additional Entry 1 class will start in January 2012. Since the ECSE started, about 800 students of many nationalities have passed through its doors. The students do not attend paid English language schools because they can't afford them.
Our school is oversubscribed – new candidates can no longer be accepted for the Beginners class until September 2012. Applicants assessed to be E1, E2 or E3 are placed on waiting lists and may get a place during the 2011/12 academic year, depending on the number of vacancies occurring by students leaving.
Students registered at the school, and of an adequate standard of spoken English, will be entered for external oral examinations (Trinity Examining Board), to take place in June 2012.
Teaching and management are provided by unpaid volunteers from St Paul’s and elsewhere. There are many candidates we cannot accommodate because of a shortage of teachers. New volunteers, with or without experience, who can give one evening every week during term time, are always welcome in this rewarding ministry. Teacher training and support is given to all who come to this ministry, if needed. Classroom accommodation is provided free of charge by Elthorne Park School. No charge is made to students for teaching, although a registration fee of £30 is required prior to registration – this goes towards the cost of the year-end external examination.
The school tries to help and encourage students to find first jobs or improve their work situation by hosting regular visits from St Paul's Workspace, when one-to-one counseling is offered and taken by students.
The vision: “ . . . after this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. [Revelation 7: 9]
